Before some days I pointed some ultimate ways to find best domain names but after studying search engine results for several days I realized the importance of domain SEO as well.
People say, why choose SEO friendly domain name when there is nothing to optimize it like content?
Most of the newbie blogger are fond of Shakespeare Quotes: What’s in a name?, they pick a rough domain name and start blogging.
Is this the right way?
Of course, you can’t optimize domain but having SEO Friendly URLs is surely going to help you after passing some more time with your website.
We all know registering a new domain is always a exciting moment for any blogger. At this point there is nothing present but plans in our mind. Here the sheet is clean and we need to fill appropriate colors to make it rock.
Sometime, picking wrong website name may drag you in trouble. In the past there were not enough blogs and you must have seen many ugly looking domains ranking well but now search engines have integrated Artificial Intelligence and reading human mind too for ranking any website. Search engines are trying to give more relevant and easy solution to their searcher.
Domain names do impact search engine optimization. Do you know how?
I have compiled some exact Multiple Domains SEO reasons based on my observation listed below.
1. Never choose EMD
If you’re just to start a new blog, I recommend not to choose an exact-match domain, or EMD.
Definition of exact-match domain?
According to Domain Sherpa,
An exact match domain or EMD is a domain name that matches precisely a targeted search engine query to obtain high rank in SERPs for this query. An exact-match domain is a domain name that itself contain the target keyword. Some people call them Keyword Domains.
For example, let us consider you wanted to rank high for “best SEO guide”. So for this EMD would be www.bestseoguide.com and the best live example in India is www.freedom251.com, the company Ringing Bell released a smart phone name freedom 251 and just for sake of single product they took the EMD.
Just watch above URL, it looks great and may rank higher for keyword “best SEO guide”.
Isn’t it? Not exactly.
Before 2012 most bloggers practiced this strategy and achieved good result. People practiced to choose SEO friendly domain name i.e EMD to improve their organic traffic. It sound amazing, if you wanted to rank high for keyword “cheap dell laptops,” no issue! Just spend few dollars on www.cheapdelllaptops.com and enjoy top ranking.
Backlinks and Quality content, nothing required.
High ranking of exact match domain sunk to low floor.
Ironically, the exact domain name is really a bad idea at least after the EMD update.
Now let me tell you what you should do.
2. Make your Brand Name as your Domain Name (for business)
The simplest and fastest way to improve your business conversion rates is choose brand name as your domain name.
Do you know Why?
Your customer know you by your brand name. So most of them assume you website URL must same as the brand name. This idea make it SEO friendly website. Finally, you will end up receiving traffic from navigational search. Navigational searches are more common than one might imagine.
What’s a navigational search?
As per Wordstream
A navigational query is a search query entered with the intent of finding a particular website or webpage. For example, a user might enter “YouTube” into Google’s search bar to find the YouTube site rather than entering the URL into a browser’s navigation bar or using a bookmark.
For example, suppose you don’t know the URL of Microsoft company then you might use these navigational queries:
- Micro Soft
- Mikro Soft (nobody’s perfect)
My search term Mikro Soft also take me to the right website, with sitelinks.
There are three main types of search queries and navigational queries are second most popular after informational queries.
This Branding signal help a lot in getting more leads. In 21 century customers know a company by brand not by a website URL. They do a navigational search of your brand name to get in touch with you.
I think I have given enough explanation for choosing your brand name as your domain name.
What are brand signals?
According to Black Coffee
Brand Signals are memory markers that function as mental shortcuts. It refer the mention or occurrence of your business name or website on the web.
Even Google differentiate website quality from high to low based on their brand signals.
Once you built your brand, even with bad SEO people comes to your website through navigational search. Brands signal may be thought more than SEO and Page Rank.
This exclusive guide will help you to build your domain as brand through SEO.
Picking your domain name same as your brand name may become your most influential factor in having a high-ranking website.
3. Do target keyword matter within domain?
After exact match domain update I don’t see great effect of target keywords in website URLs. Google and other search engines very well know how to associate your brand name with your keywords. But remember, Google need content from you to figure it out.
Take Crazy Egg, for example. The Brand name Crazy Egg is not a synonym of keywords like “heatmaps” and “analytics.” But if you do a search on Crazy Egg, I am sure Google will not shows result about eggs of hens, duck and others, but it bring up all of Crazy Egg’s service, accounts, and information.
Even if your brand name is a standard vocabulary word? Like, Apple? There shouldn’t be any issue.
I tried this but I cannot see any information about fruit on first page search result. Do you?
May be you do not have an established brand signals like Apple. But Google still have the tradition to measure brand signals.
In fact your brand name can give you success earlier but you should not lack brand name into the domain name.
4. What if Brand name include any target keyword?
There is nothing to worry about this. If it is not an exact-match-domain and include any target keyword then it called as partial-match-domain (PMD). It’ll not impact your SEO.
Remember Google research a lot before releasing any update. It only target spammy EMDs.
Even now EMDs and PMDs are not at Google gun point, instead it is targeting spammy signals around EMDs and PMDs.
Look at Moz, QuickSprout, KISSmetrics, Wordstream , can anyone guess (without visiting) their niche. But they all rank for the term “ best SEO guide”. They do not include the target best SEO guide in their domain but ranking high.
In this growing digital arena getting a brand identity is becoming more vital and it includes everything except the target keywords.

5. Choose top level domain (.com)
The extension of your matters a lot. It is actually a sign of SEO friendly domain name. If you surveys most of the successful domain end with .com, .net and .org. but .com join the majority.
You can also pick country specific domain names but be aware TLDs like .biz and .us are associated with spam.
Actually the extensions have nothing to do with your SEO but picking the wrong one may take your ranking away. 90% people assume all URLs to be ending with .com.
The .com extensions are easy to remember. Other high-quality extensions are country extensions such as .co.uk, co.in.
6. Quick tips to choose SEO friendly domain name
How to pick a good domain name for SEO?
Every body want to know this and I would prefer each of them to consider below point before registering any domain.
- Avoid numbers: when I heard domain name alltop9.com, I thought it may be alltopnine.com. In simple words, after hearing the domain, we consider it to be containing phrases only. For example, first4night.com could also be firstfournight.com.
- Avoid back-to-back same words: Domain name containing two same alphabets at a time are very much confusing. Most of the time they are misspelled and user land on different website. Usually, this backfires. People would not like to remember spellings just for your single website.
- You can join two or more words to form interesting words: I love this and most of the professional practice same strategy — Quicksprout, ShoutMeLoud, SaveDelete, Mashable etc. All are working out great.
- Hyphenated Domain Names for SEO are bad: I don’t remember any domain name which include hyphens, I never try. Actually it irritates me. SEO Friendly website contains hyphens within permalinks rather underscore. One hyphens at after meaningful keyword is enough. The domain containing hyphens are hard to share with people.
- Shorter is easier and better: look inc.com, how easier it is to spell. I saw this domain name 2 years back and it took me 2 seconds to remember till today, 15 characters are enough.
Rock with a killer domain…
