On page SEO factors list
Below are some best practiced which guarantee the acquiring of Google’s first page.
1. Better URL structure
Don’t stuff your keywords in the URL. Google has stated, they give more weight to first 4-5 words so keeping your URL is recommended.
Most of the time user click only after reading the word included within the page/post URLs. We are humans and prefer words rather than binary numbers or IP addresses.
Try to avoid bad looking URLs like bloggingnuts.com/p=234.
Long URLs actually gets less importance than short URLs.
The structure of post URL has always been in controversy among bloggers, some prefer long-dated version and other focus on short URLs.
Neil Patel, founder of 4 multi-millionaire company prefer to use long and complete dated page URL. He believes this will help search engines to rank his post in terms of freshness and may also help readers to choose a most recent post from search engine itself.
Although any rules not set to structure your URL in a better way but you copy the URL style of authority sites.
HubSpot uses category before the keywords that you’re targeting, see below snippet:
And Copyblogger uses a simple URL structure and include not more than 3 keywords.
Brent Carnduff suggest to include 3-5 words separated by hyphen (-) and not an underscore(_).
Google do not put weight on permalink style but it values the keywords used within it. It doesn’t matter whether URL is long or short but keyword-rich generic URLs do well in the search engine results pages. Everything depends on useful content.
Write URLs in a way that educates the readers about your topic without just after looking at your URLs. Your URL must be self-explanatory.
See the below link of backlinko, any users can easily remember it without any problem, it contains only 3 words.
2. Start the title with keyword
The content of the post is most important but the title is more important than inside content. By reading the title a visitor can forecast about the theme of content.
Your post title is very important on-page SEO factor and search engines give more weight to the search keyword when placed to the beginning of the title.
It is not necessary to start your title with the target keyword but doing so would definitely increase weight on the search result.
3. Title length
Title tags describe the theme of your complete post. It should be short, clear. attractive and descriptive.
Actually, the title must be within 50-65 characters and search engine are unable to display the title beyond this length. Below is a snippet of exceeded length title.
If you’re not sure about the display of your title then you can use Moz’s preview tool to see how your written published title would appear in the search engine.
Result of above activity:
4. Meta description
If you look at Survey Monkey, post having impressive meta description get 42% more clicks than simple meta description.
Below is a snippet of how meta description appears in search results:
You have only 160 characters to write meta description and there is no need to stuff your target keywords instead you can use LSI keyword else result might go against you.
There is no need to stuff keywords in your meta description (which would work against you anyway). 160 characters are just not enough space for stuffing, so instead use synonyms or latent semantic indexing (LSI) for your main keyword.
For example, if your target keyword in the title is “start blogging” then below are some LSI keyword you can use:
- start blogging and earn money
- start blogging for free
- start blogging with WordPress
- start blogging for money
You can find the related term at the bottom you’re your search results. Using these keywords may increase organic traffic to your post.
I suggest you use any SEO plugin if not using yet. Almost every SEO plugin provide an easy method to write a meta description. I use SEOPressorV5 plugin and below is the snippet of option I get to enter meta description:
5. Include Multimedia (alt tag)
If you write useful content definitely it will go far. But using images, video, and contextual representations can easily reduce the bounce rate of your site.
If you look at most successful blogs, they use lots of image and videos to attract the attention of the visitor and also it help them understand the content more accurately.
There is an SEO factor associated with every image. Use the target keyword as Alt text, Google gives more weight to images carrying alt tag with the important keyword.
6. Use Outbound Links
Using more number of high-quality outbound links on your article make Google think it a hub of useful information so giving more importance. Relevant outbound links present on your article make your website a helper type. This is an easy, white hat SEO strategy to get more traffic.
Newbie usually does not use outbound links in their article thinking visitor might leave their site after clicking the outbound link. But this one of the important SEO factor Google counts. People must do 2-4 outbound link per 1000 words.
Always link out to higher authority sites.
7. Bold, Italic and underline keyword
Latest SEO plugin recommends us to bold, italic and underlines the target keyword at least once.
8. Include your Keyword in First 100 Words
The most advanced the SEO plugin SEOPressorV5 recommends you to drop your target keyword in first 100 words.
Newbie and many intermediate bloggers always make this mistake.
They start off their post with introduction part and a long one and use the target keyword first time in the middle. Using your target keyword within first 100 words help Google understand to know about rest of the content.
9. Include your Keyword in last 100 Words
The most advanced the SEO plugin SEOPressorV5 recommends you to drop your target keyword in last 100 words.
This is something most of the bloggers don’t do but this works.
A lot of most newbie bloggers use their target keywords in the middle of the post but putting the keywords in the last 100 words may give you a better result. That helps Google understand what your page is all about.
10. Your title must be under h1 tag
I think this shouldn’t have mentioned in this on page SEO factor list because almost every WordPress theme uses the title as an h1 heading. I mentioned this for the themes that override this setting.
You should also use the important keyword in h2 and h3 heading too. It increases the performance of your post.
11. Site loading time
Every user wants the website speed must be fast enough so that their time is not wasted. Recent research found that 47% of visitor expect our website to lead within 2 seconds. I personally don’t shop from Flipkart when it take more than 2 seconds to load its home page and like me there may be hundreds.
Your site speed makes sense.
Finally, reducing your site load time can help you rank better on a search engine. You can use cache plugin and CDN as well to boost up the speed of the site.
Sometimes changing better host can reduce your site load time, I use DreamHost hosting and W3 total cache plugin and above you can see my site speed. It loads within 660 ms.
12. Add Modifiers To Your Title
Adding word like “2016”, “best”, “exclusive guide”, “top”, and “review” can help to attract more visitor to your website.
This is what most of the visitor try to search on the web. They always want some best and top guide on whatever topic. These modifiers act a long tail keyword supporter.
13. Importance of Social Sharing Buttons
The social sharing button actually does not play any role in bringing your website to the first page but it increases your direct traffic. A study by BrightEdge shows, you can increase 700% sharing rate if prominent sharing buttons are used. Indirectly your direct traffic is increased.
I use social sharing to get direct traffic.
14. Post length
Google actually like to pull out the detailed content. If you do a case study on top 10 search result of Google search result then most of the time result would be like below image. If you see my articles on category “Blogging” they all are up to 2000 words and ranking well on search engine.
I suggest you write the post of at least 2000 words, longer post help to optimize better.
15. Reduce Bounce Rate
When a visitor comes to your site and leaves it immediately – it is known as high bounce rate.
But have you tried to know why your site’s bounce rate is high?
I have a solution for you, interlinking your own articles. Yes, interlinking at the beginning of post can help you reduce bounce rate. People always read some starting paragraphs and leave your site.
16. Keyword density and LSI Keywords
Generally, 2-4% keyword density is recommended.
Instead of stuffing more same keyword on the article you can LSI keywords. LSI keyword is synonyms that Google uses to determine a page’s relevancy.
Now my long post length suggestion come to use. You can easily use more of LSI keyword into post having more number of related words.
I usually write a long post so I didn’t care much about using LSI keywords as they are automatically included. I am using SEOPressorV5 SEO plugin and it have a feature to suggest LSI keyword into my post.
You can easily find LSI keyword for any keyword free of cost, after searching for any keyword on Google, scroll down to search related area …
And use that keyword in your post.
The on page SEO factors are divided into 3 parts:
1. Keyword decoration
- Use your target keyword as bold, italic and underlined at least once.
- Use your target keyword in h1, h2 and h3 heading at least once.
2. Keywords in link
- Use Keyword in the anchor text of an internal link.
- Use Keyword in the anchor text of an external link.
- Use Keyword in Post/Page URL.
3. Content SEO
- Use target keyword in your title.
- Use target keyword in the meta description.
- Use Alt tag in images.
- Include your important keyword in first and last 100 words.
- Include your target keyword in a first and last sentence.
- Use at least 3-4 LSI keywords and target keyword density must be 2-4%.
