Every blogger want his visitors to remember his website name easily. For this we should considered some factor like who else has that name, what perception it create, is it easy for a visitor to remember and so many ways to make the decision.
Why you need your own domain name?
Although free blogging platforms help you start your blog free of cost within a minute but the URL would contain their brand sign. This doesn’t look good. So having your own domain name is a desire every blogger have and there are several reasons too. It gives you a professional look and build credibility. Good business names enhance the branding of a product, service, business or even person. It also gives you rewards of email address with same domain name which probably increase your search engine ranking. So choose domain name that suit you services delivery.
9 Free Catchy Business Names Ideas
When we name a baby we consider many factor such as it should be easy to call, remember and possibly unique. In the same way there are also many reasonable factors looked before we grab a domain name. Remember if you search on Google a list of factors comes down but here I am going to focus on some very important aspect that help you get better and branding domain name for your website. When you have a easy remembering unique website name it gives a personal touch and ensure your visitor never forget it in dream even. With those factors in mind – let’s have a look on those factors:
#1-Goals and Objectives
Before starting any business we set a definite motive to achieve it and there should be a motive behind choosing domain name for your website. I suggest you to take long term decision in terms of choosing name which represent you and your goal.
What is your blog topic ? – It must be a starting point – most domain reflect the blog topic within it such as www.bloggingnuts.com (it says this blog contain content related to blogging tips).
What you want to achieve with your blog?
- What tone and voice will it be written in? – Will it be conversational, newsy, rant-ish, humorous?
Who will be your intended audience? – Which audience are you targeting professionals, young people, cool people, geeks? I target newbie blogger.
#2-Make it easy to type
Your domain name should be easy to type. The experts recommend to have domain that is easy to spell, pronounce, remember and type. If visitor find your website name difficult to remember, there are millions of site with easy name. Easy domain name tends to receive more traffic.
For example: yogatraining.com is a good domain name, however yoga4u.com is not, because people will confuse ‘4’ with ‘for’ and ‘u’ with ‘you’. You shouldn’t need to tell people that it is numerical four or it is y-o-u you.
#3-Keep it short, 67 character
The shorter the better. If you choose domain name that is long and complex, you risk visitors to mistype or misspell it. A shorter domain name is definitely attractive. People make less mistake while typing short length domain. They are easy to say and more pleasing.
Many people have assumption that we can stuff our main keywords in longer domain so that it attract more visitor through search engine but it is easy to do search engine optimization using content.
My personal experience says shorter domain are more appealing that is the reason most of the meaningful short domains has been registered and now hard to find.
#4- Top level domain
.COM is the most popular domain extension followed by .NET and .ORG. These are technically called the Top Level Domain (TLD)
.IN is a popular extension for Indian market, so if your website focuses on Indian market, .IN extension is fine as well. It is also a cheaper option to consider.
Always prefer getting a .COM domain, if it is available.
2 Reasons to choose TLD:
- SEO – Here I am not going in much depth but give you a short snapshot, .com is most powerful followed by .net and .org. But if you want to focus traffic on targeted country better you considered TLD of that particular country like for India .in, USA .us, Australia .au and same for other countries. It will help you get indexed in local search engines. If you’re going for a more global audience try for .com or .net.
You can check if a business names available to register from the following site:

#5-Avoid numbers and hyphens
Like I said, you don’t need to tell anyone it is “f-o-u-r” or it is numerical four. And, hyphens can be forgotten by people. So, avoid both numbers.
Memorability – your visitor may mistype your domain without hyphen and land on another website.
Difficult to Communicate – It may increase frustration of your visitor, it may put more pressure on their mind to remember the domain name with hyphen.
SEO – But using hyphen within domain can be beneficial as search engine identify separate words more easily(once again there is some debate over this).
#6-Make it brand able/catchy/memorable
Well, that’s a no brainer. Your domain name should be easy to memorize. If it is catchy, that’s even better. Share it with some of your close friends and see what they feel about it. Make sure it is appealing and makes sense to others also.
Make sure it doesn’t violate any trademark and it shouldn’t be too similar to any popular website.
#7-Previously used Domain Names
If you are going to buy some previously used high PR domain, better think to check it’s history. Some bloggers buy the domain and sell them when they are banned by Google.
This is becoming one important aspect to consider while choosing domain name. I have seen number of blogger start their blog with domain that suits current content but due to some negative effects they change their content goals to some different topic. This way name just didn’t fit.
Don’t choose a name you suspect date quickly. Pick a name that retains a long term scope and it must be specific.
#9- Branding or Keyword based name
Keywords and Branding – I have seen many people focusing on these topic, some think if they choose name related to their product, chances are more people would understand their goals without analyzing them. But in case of Brandable name it is just inverse, visitors have to dip into detail to get the actual working. Below I have discussed both in short.
Keyword Based Domains – These domain are just the shadow of the product or content served in the website/blog. This practice is good. First, this make your readers understand quickly about what you’re serving and second search engine decide to rank you better as keywords are present in domain name related to services. Examples of blogs with keyword based domains are WindowsTotal, Digital Photography School and Blogging Nuts.
Brandable Domains – These domain may have some far relation with their products but are much more about creating something memorable that can become an identity in and of itself.
Crazy Egg, QuickSprout and Moz are all example of brandable domain names, we can predict their services unless we Google them. These domain take more effort to come into track but once they are in track they run at more than we expect.
I think all point mentioned above are not hard and fast rules. I have seen many blog with worst URL performing well and vice-versa. It all depends on your hard work.

So in case you have 3 domain names that you like, then ask 20 people that you know to vote which one they like the most. Tell them your niche (area) and give them the list of domain names. They should select one. You can also do this voting on your Facebook account and ask your entire friend list there to vote.
